Who: Kevey Coleman, witness
How his statement changed: The SBI report says that Coleman described one of the black men as having "plaits," or cornrows, in his hair. But Coleman gave a separate, six-page signed statement to the SBI, and nowhere in that document is there a mention of either suspect having cornrows. He does mention that one man, the lighter-skinned one directing the woman, had on dirty jeans, and that both men had loose-fitting shirts. Re-interviewed in September, Coleman told the SBI that the lighter-skinned man wore a green fatigue jacket. He also said the two suspects appeared to have the same physical characteristics as Hunt and Mitchell, and that the lighter-skinned man had something in his hair that could have been a baseball cap turned backward. When the police reinvestigated the case in August 1989, no mention is made in the police report about Coleman not wearing his contact lenses. The police report says that Coleman had seen pictures of Hunt and Mitchell and that "he could not be 100% sure, but he would honestly have to say that they were the two that he saw with the white female that morning." Then, in a final police interview in October 1989, the report reads: "Mr. Coleman again stated that the men he saw with the white female looked exactly like Sammy Mitchell and Darryl Hunt."
