Authorities treat death as homicide

JEFFERSON

Ashe County emergency workers thought they had arrived at a fatal vehicle accident over the weekend on N.C. 16, but now authorities are treating the death as a homicide.

Timothy Dwayne Shatley, 30, was dead in the driver's seat of his 1993 Chevy Astro van.

It was about 11:30 p.m. Saturday when a passerby saw that the van had run into an abutment of a bridge under construction and noticed a man slumped over the steering wheel.

First responders initially reported the death as a vehicle accident. Then, they noticed a bullet hole in the driver's side door. Authorities said they are waiting for an autopsy to release a cause of death.
