COLUMN
My column is most often about words, expressions, cliches, linguistic fads and grammar. Occasionally I write about almost anything that I think might interest my readers -- the passing scene, the human condition, religion, intolerance, ethics in advertising, human foibles, to name a few subjects. The column also serves as a forum for readers who wish to comment on something I have written, to make comments and to ask questions. A good part of many columns is made up of comments and questions from readers.
BACKGROUND
Whether I am a credible source is up to the readers to decide. I have had a lifelong interest in words and grammar and have devoted considerable time studying them. My years as an editor for the Journal taught me much.
FOR KICKS
If you could remove any words from common usage what would they be and why? I would not presume to remove any words from common usage. There are many words and expressions that I do not like and would not use, and I often point them out. Everyone is at liberty to use whatever words he or she chooses to use and to abstain from using.
