It changed the way I look at the sky. September 12th, with the absence of jet streams in the sky, was so remarkable to me. It inspired me to write a poem! You never look at the sky without seeing at least one, and many times eight or ten of them.
Watching the event unfold on television was so surreal. I guess this was the one thing I could see with my own eyes that made it all so real to me. Now when I look at the sky and see numerous jet streams, I always remember that day when there were none.
Birds owned American skies today.
Do you think they knew?
The big metal birds were silent and still,
Grounded. None of them flew.
The sun shown in Manhattan today
Where the sun didn't used to be.
The towers were gone in an instant
Like the cutting of giant trees.
The face of America changed today
A new scar we will wear for always.
The visions, the terror, the disbelief
Will be there for the rest of our days.
Wherever we were in America
We felt the pain and the fear.
The impact was felt by all of us
Even 3000 miles from there.
God has a heavy heart today
Knowing evil has scored a mark.
America showed Him that goodness still reigns
In our minds and in our hearts.
We didn't choose to fight this fight.
We never wanted it to begin.
But we as a nation won't stand down.
And our freedom we will defend.
Our colors have new meaning now
The red, the white and the blue.
We'll honor our country and our flag
And together we'll see our way through.
So many have suffered, so many were lost
Our American heros did fall.
The birds owned American skies today
And the eagle outflew them all.
