It was a day of total sadness - devastating. I was volunteering at the Vantage Golf Tournament at Tanglewood. The golfers that had already arrived just stayed glued to the TV sets.
Practicing tee shots was the last thing on their mind. It was like the world stood still. The tournament was cancelled. Players from around the world that always played here would not have been able to get flights. No one's heart was in it.
I had planned to attend the Winston-Salem Symphony's first concert for the season at the Stevens Center on Tuesday, the 11th. The concert was cancelled and a memorial concert was held on Thursday evening. The program was changed to include Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings (played at state funerals). I remember helping collect money at the concert for the American Red Cross. Also, part of the ticket sales money was donated to the Red Cross that night.
It's just a tragedy that this could happen to our great country - so many good innocent people's lives taken. I thank God that I did not lose a loved one and I pray for those who did. If I live to be a hundred, I will never ever forget the horrible sight of the planes hitting those buildings.
